Approach
I think the first step of learning comes from building a connection. Most kids don’t want to be at a tutoring session, especially after a long day of school. I work with kids who are reluctant to learn, feel self-conscious about their writing, or are generally more introverted and allow them to explore and develop naturally. I try to weave what is normally considered dry test prep into more applicable language and math skills and incorporate it seamlessly into their school curriculum.
Q&A
A resource you’d hand a curious student?
I think Greek mythology is a great starting point with timid readers and students who need a little boost in their vocabulary.
The mistake you see most often?
After the basic lessons are taught, I hone in with my students on time management, which a surprising number of students struggle with for these tests.
What you look for in a good-fit student?
It needs to be a good personality match! My relationship with my students can span for 5+ years, so it is important that they can trust me as a good guide.
What parents or students get wrong about prep?
Middle and high school math need constant reinforcement, which schools are often lacking in.
